Money Mapping is our exciting new financial education resource for 9-12 year olds, developed alongside the Money and Pensions Service. Download now to access this resource in Welsh and English. Money Mapping engages develops learner’s financial knowledge using real-life and relevant contexts and can be used to encourage investigation skills and problem solving, providing discussion opportunities around a number of financial themes, such as making choices, attitudes, value for money and risk. Developed to align with the Curriculum for Wales, the resource can be delivered to support Areas of Learning and Experience in order to facilitate development towards the Four Purposes. These include: Mathematics & Numeracy Humanities Health & Wellbeing Money Mapping can be delivered flexibly at both upper primary and lower secondary stages, however it is targeted at the key point of transition between these two. The accompanying PowerPoint can be used to support teachers’ delivery to their classes. This is an essential resource as it is specifically designed to ensure that pupils with mild to moderate special educational needs are given the opportunity to develop financial knowledge and financial capability. Through practical activities and a use of simplified text this resource covers a wide range of financial topics, including some that should be an essential part of any young person’s education – namely the dangers of gambling, online scams and understanding insurance. Your Money Matters (Wales Edition) has been designed for use with young people age 14 – 16 in Wales and covers topics including spending and saving, borrowing, debt, insurance, student finance & future planning. To view the Welsh version click here. Funded by Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, the original Your Money Matters textbook was sent to state funded English secondary schools in late 2018. With support from Martin Lewis and the Money & Pensions Service, we have now produced a Wales edition which can be downloaded in both Welsh and English. A natural extension to the Financial Education Planning Frameworks, the student facing Textbook includes guidance on money management topics such as: • Saving and spending • Borrowing • Good and bad debt • Risk and rewards • Insurance • Investments • Future planning around student loans • Tax and national insurance To provide additional support to teachers there is an accompanying Teacher’s Guide contained within the download which will highlight areas of good practice, provide examples of curriculum integration and showcase additional external support which schools could use to enrich their financial education provision. You can also download PowerPoint versions of each chapter of the Textbook for you to use in your lessons, or edit and tailor sections of content depending on the age and ability of your class. This framework aims to support the planning, teaching, and progression of financial education by setting out the key areas of financial knowledge, skills and attitudes, across core themes. The framework is designed to help you deliver financial education flexibly across the range of subjects and learning opportunities available within your school’s curriculum. It is not intended to be used rigidly. You may need to draw on ideas from other ages depending on the needs of your pupils. It can be used in a number of ways, for example to: • gauge students’ starting points for financial education; • identify learning outcomes for lessons and schemes of work; • map existing provision and identify gaps; • plan for progression between ages and key stages. This is a Money Heroes resource. Money Heroes is an award-winning FREE programme from Young Money, supported by HSBC UK, seeking to transform financial education for primary children aged 3-11. We help young people learn about money both at school and at home, supporting both educators and parents with a range of high-quality, fun and engaging resources. For more Money Heroes resources, sign up for free on our website www.moneyheroes.org.uk This resource, is suitable for students age 7-11, with flexible options for delivery including activities, differentiation, and challenges. In this resource, we begin to teach pupils about how things are paid for, without physically exchanging money. As more people are using cashless payment methods in society nowadays, this understanding is becoming increasingly important. This activity supports pupils to understand the ways that people pay for things digitally, by exploring the various ways to pay through role play. Activity length: 20 minutes per role play – these can be split over various lessons Learning objectives: (taken from the Young Money Financial Education Planning Frameworks) Managing risks and emotions associated with money: using accounts to keep money safe and to save • I can keep my money in a standard and/or online bank account and what benefits this might have. How to manage money: how to pay • I know that cash is only one way to pay for goods and services. • I can describe ways of paying that don’t involve cash e.g. debit cards, credit cards, online payments. What’s involved? First, we ask pupils to tell us all the different forms of payment they are familiar with e.g cash, debit card, credit card, apple pay, gift card, bank transfer etc – and discuss with them any they are not familiar with. Also ask: why do people choose to pay for things digitally? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this? Then, split pupils into groups of 3 – each group is given a different type of payment to focus on. They must discuss how their type of payment works, and the pros and cons of it. Then, they are given prompt and instructions to help them role play making a payment using this method, which they present to the class. Role play includes 3 different roles within the group – one plays the ‘consumer’, one plays the ‘bank’ and one plays the role of ‘money’. In this resource, we help young people begin to be able to distinguish between things they need, and things they want. It highlights the differences between the two, and encourages students to think about how people make spending and saving choices, as well as exploring how to keep money safe. Activity length: 60 minutes Learning objectives: (taken from the Young Money Financial Education Planning Frameworks) • I can explain the difference between something that I need and something I might want. • I am beginning to understand that people may make different choices about how to save and spend money. • I can make spending decisions based on my priorities needs and wants. What’s involved? In this activity, educators assemble a variety of household objects e.g. a glass of water, reading glasses, a computer game, sweets and a wooly hat. Children are asked to sort the items into two piles – things that are ‘needs’ and things that are ‘wants’. The difference between the two is then discussed. Pupils then list things they want, and search for the price of these on the internet. After, they narrow down their list to just one thing they want the most, that is a non-essential item and discuss what this would cost, and whether they have enough money to buy it. If not, introduce the idea of saving – how long would it take you to save (given different scenarios)? Pupils finally begin to make spending and saving decisions, by helping a character decide which pair of trainers to purchase. This leads to discussions around what people can afford, what they do and don’t need, and other considerations that need to be made when shopping.
